Things to do in Buenos Aires: May 5 – May 11

If you are in Buenos Aires this week, your are in luck: you can attend the most authentic tango championship, in which porteños dancers will compete to represent their city in the Tango World Festival in August. You have also a great choice of jazz and tango concerts and nice exhibitions. Keep reading to learn more about things to do this week in Buenos Aires!

1. Tango BA: Buenos Aires City Tango Competition

Campeonato de baile de la ciudad

Each year, since 2003, Buenos Aires hosts Tango Buenos Aires, a competition between the best dancers in Buenos Aires. Winners will represent the city at the World Tango Championaship which takes place in August. The competition takes place in several Milongas (tango ballrooms) across the city. We recommend Zum and Tango Soho, which are very close to Palo Santo Hotel. The final round will take place in La Usina del Arte (La Boca) on May 11th a 6PM.

2.Gallery Nights – Palermo

Gallery Nights

This year´s second edition of Gallery Nights will feature Palermo galleries. Palermo art circuit is one of the most interesting in the city and 20 art galleries will open their doors to the public for this occasion. Many will offer life shows and music. Entrance is always free and a shuttle service is available.

3. Sexteto Mayor Tango Concert at Torquato Tasso

Sexteto Mayor

“Sexteto Mayor” is one of the most famous contemporary instrumental Tango band. Founded in 1973, it is the only Argentinean tango band ever to have won a Grammy Award. Their repertoire include both classical tango pieces and more contemporary ones. Strongly recommended.

4. Quinquela Martín´s art exhibition

Quinquela Aqui y ahora

Benito Quinquela Martin is a true symbol of La Boca neighborhood and Buenos Aires´s origins. His work reflects scenes from life and work at the Buenos Aires port. He was born in La Boca and made of his quarter the epicenter of his representations.

5. Jazz show at Notorious

Antigua Jazz Band

Buenos Aires Jazz scene is growing each year. A proof of this is Antigua Jazz Band, a famous orchestra that plays traditional jazz music. They pay a great tribute to Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, among others.
