How to make Homemade Dulce de Leche?

We have a good news for all “Dulce de leche” fans! You CAN easily make it at home. How? Out of condensed milk. Easy as that.

Homemade Dulce de Leche

To make your homemade Dulce de Leche you will need:

- One can of condensed milk

- A large pot

- Water

Instructions to make you Homemade Dulce de leche:

  1. Remove the label from your condensed milk can, if it has any. Do not open the can.
  2. Pierce two holes at the top of the can with a can opener.
  3. Place the can in the pot.
  4. Fill the pot with water. The water should come up to a few centimeters (1 or 2 inches) from the top of the can.
  5. Place the pot on the stove and bring the water to a boil. The water should boil gently or simmer.
  6. Let cook, regularly adding water so it does not go below 2 or 3 inches from the top of the can.
    Cooking time:
    - 3 hours for a soft dulce de leche (sauce-like)
    - 4 hours for a thicker dulce de leche (to use in pastry, for example)



Of course, it might not be as good as the delicious tar you had found in that quaint Palermo deli when you travelled to Buenos Aires. But it is definitely a good substitute, and much cheaper than a round-trip to Argentina!
